What Every Workstation Needs

Intro

Computer protection is usually the last thing on a business owner’s mind. Their primary goal is to get workstations up and running for their employees to use and make money. However, I would argue that cyber protection is crucial for all workstations. Protecting your business against ransomware attacks is vital. There are many ways to implement cybersecurity for workstations, but at a bare minimum, I believe every workstation should have these essential cyber protections.

Anti-Virus

Antivirus is usually the most popular Cyber security application that most people get with the purchase of their workstation.  It is the simplest form of protection to have.  Even though it is simple only 70% of PC has anti-virus software and only 58% of Mac users as it. (SafetyDetectives) (vpnAlert) Antivirus software detects malware and removal anything suspicious. It has real-time protection and supports safe browsing. Features of antivirus:

  • Regular updates: Antivirus will automatically be updated to make sure devices are protected.
  • Safe Browsing: Blocks access to dangerous websites and prevents downloading of malicious files, enhancing online safety.
  • System Performance: Helps maintain optimal system performance by preventing malware that can slow down or damage your workstation.

EDR Solution

Endpoint security main purpose is to find threats that may be contained on user devices. The important features of EDR:

  • Eliminate Zero-day threat: Having EDR can protects against new cyber attacks that may not be recognized by other vendors.
  • Improve Compliance: Even through having anti-virus is great but adding EDR gives an extra layer and in some industries it a must to have.
  • Gain visibility: Gives insight into suspicious behavior that has been detected and stopped.

 Backup Solution

Depending on how you run your business having a backup solution is a great way to protect your devices and to ensure that down time is limited.  If not having endpoint detection on every workstation is recommended fully because it can be expensive, it is a must if you have a server. The key points that backups give to users:

  • Protection: Usually saved on the cloud and protection from data loss like ransomware, accidental deletions, hardware failure, and lost or stolen devices.
  • Cloud Storage: Provides secure off-site storage, reducing the risk of data loss due to physical damage or local disasters.

Conclusion

While it can be tempting to overlook cybersecurity in favor of getting workstations operational, these basic protections are crucial for safeguarding business operations. Implementing anti-virus, EDR solutions, and reliable backup systems can provide a robust defense against various cyber threats and ensure business continuity.
